Dr. Sudheer Shetty was invited to speak on " The role of Jatropha as an energy crop for rural plantation for the upliftment of the poor backward class villagers" during the workshop organised jointly by the Karnataka Backward Class Development Corporation
Limited (KBCDCL), Government of Karnataka and the Zilla Panchayat,
Mysore. The workshop was inaugurated by the Deputy Commissioner Mr. Selva
Kumar (IAS) in the presence of the KBCDCL Managing Director Mr. Vijaya
Prakash (KAS).
Dr. Shetty stressed the need for the active participation of the rural population in the
Jatropha-derived biodiesel programme and also sought the support of the Corporation in successfully implementing the
programme.

Visit of Mandya District

The senior government executives - Joint Director, District Industries Center
(DIC); Assistant Director, DIC; Deputy Director, Horticulture Department; Deputy Director, Agriculture Department; Manager, Lead Bank; Manager, the State Bank of
Mysore, Representatives from a few NGOs and Industries and other officers of the departments visited
Labland. The team visited the tissue culture lab facility and the field facility of Labland to have a first hand experience of the Jatropha production and cultivation.
The team also visited the farmer's field where Labland had supplied Jatropha plants under contract cultivation agreement. The team has expressed interest in promoting Jatropha plantation in the district of Mandya with the necessary government support.

Ms. Sumangala of the All India Radio, Bangalore interviewed Dr.
Geetha Singh on the adoption of Plant Tissue Culture Technique for large-scale production of high quality planting materials of
Jatropha. The interview would be broadcast on the 16th of September 2005 under the 'National Science Magazine'

Mehra, Manager, NABARD, Bangalore and Mr. Vivek Joshi, District Development Manager,
Mysore visited Labland to discuss various aspects of Jatropha
tissue culture, field cultivation, promotion among the farming community, the role of financial institutions, the marketing arrangements and the modalities of oil extraction. Both the officers visited the field of Labland to see the plantation and yield potential of the plants. The officers also visited a farmer's field to get farmer's impressions about the crop ad services provided by the company.

Lecture on the importance and uses
of biodiesel

Dr. Sudheer A. Shetty was invited as a member of Resource Team to deliver a lecture on the Importance and Uses of Biodiesel by the Karnataka State Government Institution, Abdul Nazir Saab State Rural Development
Organisation, on the 9th of August. Speaking to the Agricultural Scientists from the State who had participated in the agriculture extension programme at Abdul Nazir Saab State Rural Development
Organisation, Dr. Shetty stressed on the need to bring awareness among the farming community on the importance of selecting quality seeds/seedlings of Jatropha plantation. In view of the rush among farming community to grow Jatropha in their field, spurious seed materials are being supplied to the farmers without testing the performance of the planting materials, Dr. Shetty added. He sought the cooperation of the Agricultural Officers in spreading, among the farming community, the need to go in for quality planting material for the successful and sustainable growth of biodiesel operations.
